Malcesine lies across Lake Garda from Limone and a little further South. Most days it is clearly visible and it's sometimes possible to pick out the line of the cable car running up from Malcesine to the top of Monte Baldo, more than 5000 feet above the level of the lake.
Like Limone, Malcesine is very pretty with old narrow streets decorated by flowers but in Malcesine the view from the top of the mountain behind is easily accessible by cable car. I'm sure the views from the top of the mountain behind Limone are equally beautiful but it's a very long climb and we didn't get that far.
It's surprising how much difference a couple of thousand metres can make. Where Malcesine was hot, the alpine meadows at the top of Monte Baldo were positively cool, even at the beginning of June. There were still places in the mountains on this side of Lake Garda where pockets of snow hung on.
There are still so many beautiful places we haven't seen and if advertising on this web site from hotels, tour operators and travel companies will help pay for us to explore further we won't be complaining.
